What will I learn in Illustrating On the Go with Procreate course?

9 lectures / 1h

Document Setup

We will learn the basics to set up a document file in Procreate and how to import a sketch to use it as a base for our illustration. Make sure to take a sketchbook and a pencil if you like to sketch out your ideas traditionally.

Sketch

Let’s start! We will outline our sketch and refine it while learning useful techniques and composition tips, as well as dive into the different tools that Procreate has to offer and take a glimpse at the brush engine!

Color Rough

Coloring! With our sketch being ready and set we can now take a soft brush and start to create a first idea of what colors we want to use.

Workflow Color

To optimize our workflow, we will learn more about how to pick and save colors from our color rough.

Workflow Brushes

Next, we will do the same with our brushes. Sometimes you can forget which brush you used for linework and which one for structures. To avoid that, we will create a new brush folder and learn how to paste our brushes inside.

Shapes

Now we are all set up to start the main work on our illustration. We are going to build up the shapes on different levels and block in the colors, as well as learn more tricks in Procreate.

Structure and Depth

Now we can go crazy by using our brushes and create textures to enhance the depth of our illustration. This part is where you should take your time and experiment to find out what looks best for you.

Final Touches

Let’s wrap up and complete the finishing touches: We will add smaller details like leaves for the trees and finalize the color, as well as play with negative spaces. Remember to name all your layers accordingly if you want to use your illustration to animate it later!

Export

It’s done! Congratulations. You will learn in this lesson how to crop your illustration for Instagram, as well as how to export it as a psd file for further possible animation. I hope you enjoyed this class and l look forward to seeing your creations, so feel free to tag me on social media!

About the Author

Hi! I’m Katrin Suchowski and I’m a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in Hamburg.
I studied communication design but always had a soft spot for illustration, so I’m now combining those two passions. I love using more graphic shapes, structures and lively bold colors and keeping my possibilities open. That’s why I often create illustrations of my own so that they also could be used for animation later.
