Motion Beast

No bullshit course on animation and motion design in After Effects.

The course will help you overcome AE-related barriers and fears which are standing between you and the wonderful world of animation and motion design

After Effects is hard to grasp

Confusing tools that don't behave the way they should. All those new hotkeys, a brush that will not draw, let alone pixel perfect animation.

While working on wonderful animations we will go through all AE tools and panels step by step. All that to make sure you know what each hotkey stands for and how to finally make this damn brush draw

Learning on Youtube is tedious

There are tons of youtube tutorials teaching to make one or another effect. But it's far from certain that it will become the best solution for your problem. There is not much use in such learning and it's hardly structured.

We've developed a structured course that will make you certain of what tools to use for each case in your projects.

Animations aren't smooth enough

You've tried to recreate other artists' work, but your animation still looks laggy and far from smooth? Usually, that's the theory behind the animation that is missing.

On this course, we pay special attention to Disney's animation movement principles that can bring you closer to that desired smoothness.

Projects are too complex

You've just finished a huge project but you have a hard time with any request for subtle changes? It's hard to work on a project that doesn't have a system in it.

Starting from the first day we will steadily increase complexity and bring a systematic approach to both small and big projects.

Scripts & expressions are terrifying

AE is complicated enough, and there are also scripts and expressions. Making an animation manually takes loads of time. Instead, you can learn a few lines of code, create a few variables and your progress will skyrocket!

You will not only learn how to make expressions, but you will also get some top-notch lifesaving scripts developed by us to help you.

It's too time consuming

Maybe you just avoid animations because you feel like you will waste a lot of time without learning much? Or you tried learning animation and realized that creating something worthwhile will take weeks or even months?

In Motion Beast course you will see your progress right at the very first classes, which will save you loads of time when working on your future projects.

Is this course for me?

We created this course with motion designers and illustrators on our mind, but we've received positive feedback from a very broad audience. If you feel the desire to make smooth animations — we are here for you.

Beginners and advanced motion designers

If you are only starting your journey or you are already in the industry and looking for a solid bullshit-free theoretical foundation and up-to-date practice — you are in the right place.

Illustrators and people of art

Looking for ways to make your art look more alive? Tired of static images? Imagine what you can achieve if you learn how to animate your illustrations.

Graphic and User Interface designers

We will give you the foundation that will help you animate any interface or branded graphics. No more templates and boring motionless projects!

Videographers and video industry specialists

Although we do not focus on video production, montage or compositing, we give a solid foundation for motion design. With it you can add stylish transitions, captions, text animations and other useful tricks.

Marketing experts and social media managers

Video is the cornerstone of marketing. Tired of waiting for designers to create a simple square video with flying text for Facebook? You will be surprised how easily you can make one on your own.

Bloggers, entrepreneurs and self-development enthusiasts

Whether you run your online business, host webinars or just search for your future profession, having knowledge of how to make whatever you do attractive is a must-have.

What will I learn in a Motion Beast course?

Everything from After Effects basics to character rigging and frame by frame animation. We are constantly improving our curriculum with each new feedback from our students to make it even better and broader.

Introduction

Introduction lecture will outline what is needed to succeed in the course, provide you with additional resources, links to our communities, plugins and other organizational information just to get you started.

1. Interface, Transform Properties (16:58)

We will go through interface, major AE panels, customisation, "Collect files" function, files import and Project panel, basics of composition, instrument panels, viewport, layers & timeline

2. Shape Layers & Masks (35:14)

We will study Shape layers, simple shapes, principles of work with the "Brush" tool, common path settings, masks, parenting & importing files from Adobe Illustrator.

3. Shape Modifiers (36:59)

We will understand what shape modifiers are, what possibilities for animation they uncover, what combinations you can use them in and much more.

4. Easings (22:41)

We will go through the most important things in animation — easings. Which means smooth animation. We will look through easing examples, how to distinguish good easing from bad easing, and once and for all will decide what's better: Values Chart or Speed Chart.

5. Effects & Stylization. Part 1 (20:36)

We will learn different ways to stylize your art, what animation possibilities are hidden in Adjustment Layer, what is the best use case for "Pre-compose" and what makes it different from grouping.

6. Effects & Stylization. Part 2 (21:20)

Here we dive even deeper into the stylization of your animation. We will learn how to make stylish liquid animation, glitches and much more. Using the glitches example, we will look through different effects that you can use later in your practice.

7. Loops (13:27)

We will learn how to make seamless cycles and endless loops, and what type of movements and transitions can make your animation much more interesting.

8. Text Animation (20:59)

We will understand what is type layer, what settings are available for animation and how we can use that to animate text. We will animate text along the path, have a look at animators and range selectors, and understand how to properly save presets for the future.

9. Morphings (12:02)

We will learn how to morph one object into another, try the main methods and find out what conditions should be met to create realistic looking morphing.

10. Lettering Animation (24:41)

We will learn all possible tools and instruments that give life to any possible type of letterings out there.

11. Optimize Your Workflow (17:39)

We will learn the ways to optimize and speed up the work process due to a systematic approach to motion design. In the same module, you will have access to our bestselling plugins and internal studio scripts, that will help you quadruple your productivity.

12. Logo Animation (15:16)

We will learn new techniques and ways to animate logotypes, understand the latest trends in this area and receive tons of motivation by animating your own logo.

13. Expressions. Part 1 (23:40)

We will learn a basic introduction to JavaScript language that is enough to start making your own simple scrips. We will understand what are variables, arrays, how to build conditions and perform basic arithmetical operations. We will also learn how to make almost everything that we do manually faster with just a few lines of code.

14. Expressions. Part 2 (21:10)

We will learn very handy functions, understand how to make dependencies between parameters and finally get to know what is animation without keyframes. We will learn how to export animations into the code and use it in any online projects. You will also receive some handy scripts that you will definitely benefit from in the future.

15. Export to JavaScript and 12 Animation Principles (16:29)

We will thoroughly examine and recreate all 12 principles of Disney animation that, if properly used, can improve almost any type of animation.

16. Character Animation. Walks (17:17)

One of the greatest animators at Warner Brothers Studio Ken Harris once gave some advice: "A walk is the first thing to learn. Learn walks of all kinds, because walks are about the toughest thing to do right", so that's what we will go through.

17. Character Animation. Runs (17:16)

It's not enough to speed up the walk to make a character run. There are quite a lot of differences between these cycles. Here we will learn these differences.

18. Rigging (29:25)

By this moment it should be clear how difficult it is to animate characters with basic instruments of After Effects. Here we will learn how to create a comfortable rigging with controls so that you will not have to suffer from paths animations and basic transformations.

19. Pseudo 3D & Face Rig (22:49)

We will understand how to imitate volume with the help of simple 2D layers and look through one of the most popular techniques to create a facial rig of a character.

20. Facial Animation (25:14) NEW

In this lesson, we will consider very important thing which most of animators-beginners usually forget about — head animation and emotions!

21. Path Animation (30:07) NEW

In this lesson, we will consider the principles and techniques of Path property animation. It’s like a light transition from After Effects parametric animation to classical frame-by-frame techniques.

22. Frame by Frame animation (44:03) NEW

We will learn the techniques needed to create frame by frame animation in Adobe Animate and how to properly transfer this animation into After Effects to create outstanding animation projects.

23. Frame by Frame animation. Part 2 (37:36) NEW

We will have a closer look at Pose-to-pose approach which will save you a lot of time while planning and creating complex animations and we will also figure out 3 techniques to clean up and finalize your shots.

Antonia Dkm

I'm already a senior motion designer, but i did still learn some tips and tricks. Motion beast is recommended not only for beginner but for anyone motion design lover whatever their level. I love the way you teach, the practice exercises and everything. You guys are awesome!

Azedine Hiri

Motion Designer, Morocco

I've tried studying on several online-courses for last 3 years. Motion Beast is the most organised and interesting, but is not that simple in the same time. You should be prepared for the intensive course with some home work. So you must absorb new information as soon as you can. I was a totally beginner before starting this course and the tasks were challenging for me. But now i feel more confident. Of corse I still have to learn many things in this area to improve my skills, but it was a great start! Thanks!

Jana Iana

Illustrator, Germany

There is always a chance that you will get nothing new from an online course... High-quality video lessons, additional and relevant materials, consultations, hardcore home tasks – you can find all of that here. You will receive a lot! I highly recommend it.

Anna Loco

UI Designer, Ukraine

EXCELLENT! I tried to learn after effects a long time ago and gave up and was extremely intimidated because I thought it was too complex. After taking the first course, I was mind blown. I have learned so much from just two lessons and I feel comfortable using some effects and expressions. [...] Overall, the videos are super helpful and I will definitely recommend this to my peers.

Yes, all the artwork that you create on the course belongs to you. You can share and tweet and dribbble whatever animation you create. We would be grateful if you mention our school while sharing, we have @motiondesignschool accounts almost on every network.

Will I get enough knowledge to land a job?

We have students who successfully landed on a position of Junior/Middle Motion designer. If you have a UI/UX background and you plan to animate your interfaces, you can also get a raise and charge more for your work. Most of our students become freelance motion designers and make a living from that. It's up to you how hard you practice and how much time you spend on gaining new skills.

How long does it take to successfully finish the course?

It usually takes at least 8 hours per week for three months for a student to get to the final stage. We do recommend to spend as much time as possible since you are gaining new skills here, it's never an easy journey.

Will this course fit me if I have some skills in After Effects?

As for our plugins, you will have free access during the three-month period with a possibility to prolong the ownership after you finish the course.

Will we learn Cinema 4D (or any other 3D software)?

Not for now. We did our best to concentrate on After Effects, and 2D motion design not to make the course too tedious and bulky. We do cover how to imitate 3D effect though.

What is the minimum knowledge needed to succeed in the course?

We highly recommend having at least a beginner overview of other Adobe products like Photoshop or Illustrator but we do not require that. The most important thing is to have a desire to study and faith in yourself. Lack of motivation is the only thing that can drag you away from successfully finishing the course.
